The SeizureSafehouse project was founded in response to a critical need within the online epilepsy community: the need for a truly private, ethically managed, and supportive space free from exploitation. Our entire operation is built on a foundation of unwavering principles, guided by our “3 S’s.” This Code of Ethics is our public promise to every person who seeks refuge in our community.
1. Support
We are committed to fostering a non-judgmental and empathetic environment where individuals and their loved ones can share their journeys. Support in our community is always guided by shared personal experience, not medical directives. We believe in the power of connection to combat the profound sense of isolation that can accompany epilepsy.
2. Safety
The safety of our members—physically, emotionally, and digitally—is our paramount concern. This is a pro-treatment, science-affirming space. We have a zero-tolerance policy for medical misinformation, harmful advice, and stigmatizing language. Our commitment to safety is backed by a robust, 15-point rulebook and proactive, vigilant moderation to ensure our “safehouse” lives up to its name.
3. Spreading Awareness
Our goal is to be a positive force that combats the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding epilepsy. We are dedicated to providing and sharing hopeful, accurate, and empowering information. We believe that by building a healthy community, we can spread a healthier understanding of epilepsy in the wider world.
Our Promises to You
To fulfill this mission, we make the following non-negotiable promises:
- Your Stories are Sacred: We will never use content from our private community spaces for any external media, such as podcasts or YouTube channels, without the explicit, enthusiastic, and written consent of the author. Your privacy is not a commodity.
- This is Not a Business: We will never solicit donations from our community members or use this platform for financial gain. The SeizureSafehouse project is, and will always be, strictly non-commercial.
- Transparency and Accountability: Moderation is a service to the community, not a dictatorship. Our rules are public and will be applied fairly and consistently. We welcome constructive feedback and are committed to being accountable to our members.
- Do No Harm: We are dedicated to protecting our members from the dangers of harmful advice. We will always encourage members to partner with their medical team, and we will not permit any content that encourages disregarding professional medical care.
This Code of Ethics is the standard to which we hold ourselves accountable, and it is our promise to every person who joins our community.
Sincerely,
L. Madison Brooks
